My parents (who are both biology/botany teachers...therefor really into earth/environment stuff) want to get one of those new Tesla Roadsters, or possibly even a cheaper electric car with less range and power if they aren't able to source a Tesla(The island is only 30 miles across anyways). Then, my dad is having their house in Kauai fitted with Solar panels lol. I thought it was pretty funny, but after chatting with my dad on the phone, he said he's 100% confident that in a year's time (I assume when they have everything done) they will not only NOT have an electric bill, but since they will be charging the car with the electricity from their house (the sunlight), they also will also no longer be paying for gasoline except for with his truck. He said they get plenty of sunlight there which is definatley true, and after running the numbers they should actually still have quite a bit of electricity left over to sell back to the electric company :) How cool is that? If it works...then as much as I love a car's gasoline motor...their is a freaking solution people!
